- It applies to the hospital part of the premium only, never extras.
- You keep it until you turn 41, then it falls by 2% a year until it reaches nothing.
- It is separate from Lifetime Health Cover loading, which starts if you take out hospital cover after the 1 July following your 31st birthday. How the loading works.
Common questions
Which health insurers offer the under-30 discount?
In the government's policy data (1 Oct 2026 release), 17 of the 27 insurers selling hospital cover offer it on at least one hospital product: Medibank, Bupa, GMHBA, CBHS, Westfund, Doctors' Health Fund, Health Partners, Phoenix Health Fund, nib, HBF, Teachers Health, Defence Health, Latrobe Health, AIA Health, Peoplecare, Mildura Health Fund and RBHS. 10 do not: HCF, Australian Unity, HIF, Police Health, St.Lukes Health, Navy Health, onemedifund, HCi, ACA Health and Hunter Health Insurance.
How much is the age-based discount?
Up to 10% of the hospital premium: 2% for every year you are under 30 when you take out the policy, so 10% from 18 to 25, then 8%, 6%, 4% and 2% at 26 to 29. You keep it until you turn 41, after which it falls by 2% a year. It does not apply to extras.
Do I keep the discount if I switch insurers?
Only if the new insurer chooses to honour it. Insurers do not have to offer the discount, and whether it carries over on a transfer is their decision too. The government's data records whether each policy allows it for people transferring in.
Can I get the discount on a family policy?
Adults aged 18 to 29 on the policy can, with a couple's discount averaged across the two adults. Young people covered as dependants on a parent's family or single-parent policy do not get it.
