Below Gold, it is optional, and in the government's policy data (1 Oct 2026 release) 4 products below Gold include it: Galib Silver Plus Hospital (GU Health), Medibank Silver Plus Advanced (Medibank), Secure Silver Plus (Medibank) and Apia Silver Premium Hospital Plus (Apia Health Insurance). Every other Basic, Bronze and Silver product excludes it.

The law allows a waiting period of up to 12 months for a pre-existing condition, meaning signs or symptoms in the six months before you joined or upgraded, and 2 months otherwise. The insurer's appointed doctor decides whether a condition is pre-existing. Switching insurers at the same level of cover carries over waiting periods already served.
