H. pylori breath test in Australia: cost and preparation
You can book an H. pylori breath test in Australia without a GP referral through i-screen for A$129. It is done at one of i-screen's designated collection centres, where you give a breath sample before and after a test drink, so it is not an at-home test. The at-home option is a different test, a stool antigen test sent as a posted kit.

Breath test or stool test: which is at home?
The two tests use different samples. The breath test is given at a collection centre; the stool antigen test is a kit posted to you and done at home. This guide covers the breath test.
| Test | Price | Sample | Results | What it covers | Link |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Helicobacter Pylori Breath Test | A$129 | Breath, at a collection centre | Not stated on the product page | A carbon-labelled urea breath test: breath samples before and after a test drink. | See this test |
How the breath test works
- Order the test online. No GP referral is needed.
- For a blood, urine or breath test, i-screen emails a pathology request form; take it, printed, with ID to one of its designated collection centres. No appointment is needed.
- Results are published to your i-screen dashboard, and you are emailed when they are ready.
At the centre you breathe into a collection bag, drink a test solution containing carbon-labelled urea, wait, then give a second breath sample.
i-screen's FAQ says the website price includes all fees and charges. Any other collection centre may accept the form, but it will bill you again.
H. pylori breath test preparation: what to do before you go
- For 14 days before, i-screen asks you to avoid antacids, bismuth preparations and some prescription medicines it lists.
- Fast for 4 to 6 hours before the test.
- Check with your doctor before stopping a prescribed medicine to take the test.
i-screen states on the product page: “A result is not a diagnosis on its own.” Before ordering, the i-screen review sets out who reviews results and the cancellation terms.
